Birra Cala , a Taste of Calabria, Brewed with Character:
Birra Cala was born in 2022 in Scalea, on Calabria's Riviera dei Cedri, the dream of a father, Luigi, and his sons, who wanted to bottle the unmistakable character of their region. Every beer is brewed with water from the slopes of Pollino National Park, Italy's largest national park, and crafted from start to finish in Calabria: from the grain to the design on the label.
AB Connections Wine is the exclusive Australian importer of Birra Cala. This isn't just another beer on the shelf, it's Calabria, in a bottle.
Approachable, beautifully made beers for everyday drinking, brewed

Q: What is Italian Grape Ale (IGA)?
A: Italian Grape Ale is a beer brewed with real wine grape must, the juice; skins and pulp of wine grapes added during brewing. It combines the character of beer with the aromatics of wine. Birra Cala's IGA Collection uses must from historic Calabrian wineries including Cantina Librandi.
Q: Where can I buy Italian craft beer in Sydney?
A: AB Connections Wine imports Birra Cala directly from Calabria and ships Australia-wide from Sydney. Order online, or pick up for free in Botany, NSW.
Q: What makes Birra Cala different from other craft beers?
A: Birra Cala is brewed entirely in Calabria, from water sourced in Pollino National Park to ingredients like Calabrian cedar and chilli. It's a small, family-run brewery, not a mass-market brand and its IGA range is a style unique to Italy.
Q: Can I get Birra Cala for my restaurant or bottle shop?
A: Yes, AB Connections Wine works directly with independent bottle shops, delis, wine bars and restaurants across Sydney. Get in touch through our Contact page for wholesale pricing.
Q: Why does IGA cost more than a regular beer?
A: Italian Grape Ale isn't a regular beer. Each bottle is brewed in small batches with real grape must from a single Calabrian winery, in the same vintage-driven way wine is made, not mass-produced like typical craft beer. You're paying for a single-winery, single-vintage product, not a six-pack.
